WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus

February 6, 2009 - Update
Dear WCU Parents and Families:

I’m writing to share with you how the current economic crisis is impacting Western Carolina University and the steps we are taking to manage this situation.   I want you to know that we are working hard to manage our budget to ensure that Western Carolina remains the great educational value for which it is renowned, and to ensure that our student financial aid programs respond to your needs.

The WCU community is working together to come up with creative approaches to minimize the impact of budget cuts on students and their educational experience.  For example, in the coming months, some classes may increase 3 to 9 additional students on average; the academic day may extend beyond what is currently typical, with an increase in the number of sections of courses being offered between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Since the largest proportion of our budget supports personnel, to meet budget cut mandates we may have no choice but to reduce the number of faculty and staff we employ. If this becomes necessary, personnel reductions will be made selectively and in a manner that will protect the overall quality of Western’s academic programs and minimally impact students.

WCU also remains dedicated to helping our students and their families plan and prepare for college expenses.  Let me assure you that Federal student aid remains readily accessible.  While Congress is debating a new economic stimulus package, which includes funding for Pell grant increases, our Financial Aid Office is processing financial aid applications for the upcoming academic year.  Although we cannot be absolutely certain what will happen, the Financial Aid Office is here to help answer your questions and address your concerns.  You may contact them at (828) 227-7290.

Additionally, the Financial Aid officers have the flexibility to use their best professional judgment when awarding financial aid packages.  Conditions that merit the use of professional judgment in the award process include a parent’s loss of employment or extraordinary medical expenses.  Please do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office if significant events such as these have occurred in the last year or should you have any questions.  Our best advice at this time is to apply for financial aid no later than March 31, 2009 and follow-up with the Financial Aid Office if your family’s financial situation changes.

In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to provide you with updates about the steps we are taking.  Updates will be posted on the WCU Family Association website.  Despite these difficult times, please know that WCU remains dedicated to preparing our students for graduation so they can help create the solutions of tomorrow.

Sincerely,

John W. Bardo
Chancellor
