Mountain Heritage Center Auditorium, Rm 110
Drs. Jamie Davis (Department of Modern Foreign Languages) and John LeBaron (Coulter Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning) are pleased to announce that visiting scholar, Professor Seppo Tella from the University of Helsinki will offer a community-wide seminar addressing the challenges posed by a shrinking, networked world for effective contemporary higher education. This event is open at no charge to the entire WCU community and the surrounding region.
Professor Tella brings a rich background in foreign language teaching, teacher education, media literacy and cross-cultural development. He leads several international projects in these areas, has published extensively, and serves at his home University in faculty and leadership roles. As a teacher educator, he is deeply familiar with the Finnish elementary and secondary school system, which consistently ranks at the peak of excellence in international studies of school quality, according to The Economist. We are fortunate to host Dr. Tella in our community.
Students are welcome to participate in this event, whether or not connected to a particular course. Instructors teaching at that time are invited to have their students attend Professor Tella's seminar if his topic is deemed relevant; (if so, please contact Dr. LeBaron well in advance in case a venue change is needed).
Professor Tella's detailed CV is located at http://www.helsinki.fi/~tella/cvTella.pdf.
Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Tella's visit is sponsored by the WCU Visiting Scholar program, the Jay M. Robinson Educational Technologies Endowment and the Provost's Office. This is a seminar of the Jay M. Robinson Educational Technologies Endowment, one of a coming series of events sponsored by Western's professorial endowments.
