Initially published in Asheville Poetry Review, Carter’s poem – “Adam and Steve” – will now be included in an anthologized compilation of poems that have been reviewed during the past 12 months. The anthology, edited by David Wagoner, will be printed by Scribner in cloth and paperback in September.
“Naturally, we are very proud of this honor for Catherine Carter,” said Elizabeth Addison, head of WCU’s English department. “This recognition is special in that she did not seek it. The distinctive quality of Catherine’s poetry attracted the attention of the collection editor as he chose poems from the many literary journals that publish poetry.”
In 2007, the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association awarded Carter (pictured) the Roanoke-Chowan Prize for “The Memory of Gills,” her book of poetry published by the Louisiana State University Press. Carter also has published poems in a multitude of literary journals, including North Carolina Literary Review, Iodine Poetry Journal, Barefoot Muse, Tar River Poetry Review and Cider River Poetry Review.
