Held on WCU's campus in Cullowhee, N.C., Mountain Heritage Day is a combination old-fashioned mountain fair and showcase for authentic Southern Appalachian folk arts, with the atmosphere of a big family reunion.
Admission to the festival grounds and parking are free.
Mountain Heritage Day regularly attracts more than 25,000 visitors, just as the first hint of autumn is touching surrounding mountain peaks. It takes place in the heart of one of the nation’s premier vacationlands, with the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Cherokee, home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, located just minutes away.
A visit to Mountain Heritage Day, combined with stops at other local attractions, makes for a fine early fall weekend in the North Carolina mountains.
With a festival midway offering more than 140 booths of handmade arts and crafts, Mountain Heritage Day has been rated as one of the top 200 craft events in the U.S. The festival also plays a vital role in helping to maintain and showcase the authentic folk arts and skills of the mountains. WCU’s Mountain Heritage Center once again will provide demonstrations and exhibitions of traditional mountain crafts and skills such as woodcarving, basket making, blacksmithing, quilting, and weaving.
