Cullowhee Rock & Rumble Fest

The 2010 Rock & Rumble Fest will be hosted at the Base Camp Cullowhee Climbing Wall from 10am-5pm on April 24th, 2010. Last year twenty-five contestants from five southeastern colleges competed for top honors in the men’s and women’s recreational, intermediate, and advanced categories. Base Camp Cullowhee staff and volunteers from the Western Carolina Climbing Team and Parks and Recreation Management department were on hand for everything from duties as registrars, masters of ceremony, judges, and medics, to silent auction hosts.

USA Climbing, a professional organization that consists of national and international rock climbing teams, will also sponsor the competition. The Cullowhee Rock & Rumble competition will be part of their Collegiate Climbing Series and will serve as the Appalachain Regional Finals venue.USA Climbing will conduct its Collegiate Climbing Series in six regions across the nation with 30 competitions. Competitors in this series must be currently enrolled in an accredited academic institution.

The Collegiate Climbing Series is part of USA Climbing's effort to bring competitive climbing to a national level such as established sports like football or baseball. Their biggest aspiration is to institute the sport as an Olympic sport some time in the near future.

Southeastern Climbers Coalition

Last year, through the generous donations of our sponsors and the efforts of the WCU Climbing Team, The Cullowhee Rock & Rumble was able to raise $425 for charity. This year we are excited to bring back the silent auction and plan on offering the proceeds to the Southeastern Climbers Coalition. Members of the climbing team will seek donations again this year from both area and national sponsors for this worthy cause.

The Southeastern Climbers Coalition is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to preserving climbing access in the Southeast. Started in 1993 when a group of climbers banded together to help out with ongoing access issues at Sunset Rock, atop Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The group had positive results from the start and went on to sponsor cleanups and trail days of climbing areas, raise money to purchase land and to keep climbing areas open for future generations. SCC volunteers are climbers from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina and the Ozarks who have joined forces to resolve local climbing access issues. The Southeastern Climbers Coalition aims to provide an ongoing means for climbers throughout the area to come together and respond effectively to access threats to crags, as well as the impacts of increasing use.
