The principal strand for Beginning Teacher Induction provides modeling and on-site assistance and support for developing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), including engaging all teachers in walkthroughs and reflective dialogue for continuous learning.

Our public school partners and university faculty and support professionals have identified the need to provide training for school leaders, in addition to mentors, to support and nurture beginning teachers. Minutes of the SUTEP Induction Committee include a recommendation to Improve Instructional Leadership for Assistant Principals and Principals.
Professional development for school leaders, in the area of teacher induction support, has been integrated into the induction program as a means of addressing the need for building level leadership that increases teacher retention. One goal of the program is to provide training and support to ensure effective leadership that promotes increased student achievement.
A principal strand has been added to the WCU Beginning Teacher Induction Symposium led by Dr. Kathleen Jorissen, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations (ELF). A series of professional development opportunities follow the symposium, including instructional walk-through training.
Faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations (ELF) have expertise and practical experience in a wide variety of areas and can provide professional development and support for principals, district office personnel, and superintendents in matters such as: instructional leadership and support, recruitment and retention of teachers, leadership for special education, moral and ethical leadership, finance, and personnel.
