Health sciences students at Western Carolina University recently contributed more than 800 nonperishable food items to the Community Table in Sylva.

The donations came through the fourth annual Health Sciences Food Drive, organized by the Western Athletic Training Association, a student-run organization for athletic training majors at WCU.

WATA was assisted in collecting food supplies this year by the student clubs for environmental health and health information administration majors. Together, the three organizations collected 826 food items during the last month of the fall 2008 semester. Collections were donated to the Community Table in Sylva during Western’s final exam week.

This year’s drive was organized by junior athletic training student Dan Brown and sophomore athletic training student Jeremiah Nichols. The students said they were motivated to organize the event to give back to the community and to help those less fortunate.

“This year’s food drive was a great success in energizing students enrolled in programs in the health sciences to give back to their local communities,” Nichols said. “It’s encouraging to see students get involved to assist in such a noble cause.”
