When you complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the federal processor determines what amount of money you and your family should be able to contribute to your educational expenses. That determination is made by looking at such items as the amount of money you and your family earn, any savings and investments, and the number of people in your family. This information is then used to calculate the expected family contribution (EFC).
The Financial Aid Office takes the calculated EFC and compares it to the cost of attendance (COA) at WCU. The COA includes tuition and fees, housing and meal plan allocations, and miscellaneous expenses. To determine the amount of financial need a student has, the school subtracts the EFC from the cost of attendance.
Once the financial need is determined, WCU uses its packaging philosophy to complete the financial aid award. Any grants and scholarships you qualify for will be awarded first, and then your financial aid award will be completed with work study, student loans and parent loans.
All students are given a budget which is used to calculate their financial aid needs.
