target=_blank_>Mary Deck, professor of counseling at Western Carolina University, received the 2008 Ruth McSwain Distinguished Professional Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the School Counseling Profession, the highest award given by the North Carolina School Counselor Association.
Deck, a resident of Waynesville and native of Forest City, joined the WCU faculty in 1990 and has experience as a school counselor, social worker and special education teacher. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Appalachian State University, a master’s degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in school counseling from Western Carolina University and a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Virginia.
Western Carolina’s community counseling and school counseling programs are part of the human services department within the College of Education and Allied Professions and are built on a commitment to the belief that individuals are valuable, responsible, and capable. Students in the program learn how to become counselors who create conditions in which people prize themselves as human beings and act accordingly.
