November 24 - January 24 Pre-Celebration School Supply & Book Drive

Support the dream by donating school supplies and books to our local community!  School supplies will be donated to local schools in Jackson County while new and used books will be donated to the Friends of the Library in Sylva.

Collection sites are on campus in the Multicultural Center, Center for Service Learning, College of Education, Residential Living, Hunter Library and in the town of Sylva and Dillsboro too!

Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin

University Center Theater

Five years in the making and the winner of more then 20 awards, Brother Outsider illuminates the life and work of Bayard Rustin, a gay African-American, a visionary activist and strategist who has been called “the unknown hero” of the civil right movement.

Screening followed by an Open Forum discussion led by Dr. Cheryl Joy Daly, Assistant Professor and Director of Master’s program in College Student Personnel, WCU.

Dr. Julianne Malveaux

Dr. Julianne Malveaux is the 15th President of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, NC.  Recognized for her progressive and insightful observations, she is also an economist, author and commentator, and has been described by Dr. Cornel West as “the most iconoclastic public intellectual in the country.”

A committed activist and civic leader, Dr. Malveaux has held positions in women’s, civil rights, and policy organizations.  Her popular writing has appeared in USA Today, Black Issues in Higher Education, Ms. Magazine, Essence Magazine, and the Progressive.  Dr. Malveaux has hosted television and radio programs, and appeared widely as a commentator, on networks including CNN, BET, PBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, C-SPAN and others.

“Creative Dreams: An Artistic Exploration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Join us for an evening of the arts as WCU’s very own Black Theater Ensemble will perform “The Meeting,” a play about a meeting between Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X.  Essay contest winners from WCU and local middle and high schools will share their prize winning papers, and student art will be displayed throughout the University Center.

Please share your creative and artistic interpretations and creations, recite a piece that speaks to your heart and spirit, and enjoy a tribute to Dr. King through words, pictorial and musical representations of the Civil Right’s Movement. Come see the Special Guest Poet!!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Part II

College students from Western Carolina University, Mars Hills College and Warren Wilson College will work together in service to meet the needs of youth focused agencies.  Some of the volunteer opportunities include volunteering with Creative Communications Youth and Family Services, Habitat for Humanity and Youth Empowered Solutions.
