Resources for Teaching Writing

The WaLC's staff, tutors, and web resources are here to help you teach your students to be effective communicators.  See the links on the left hand side for help with a variety of teaching strategies.

If you are struggling with how to design an assignment or how to grade a stack of papers without going crazy, we can help.  In addition, our Assignment Strategies page (for students) gives specific guidelines on common types of papers. We can also review any writing assignment you are planning; contact Leah Hampton for a consultation on the essays and other projects in your class.

Our plagiarism page includes our popular mini-course, “Avoiding Plagiarism," which explains the types of plagiarism and how to avoid them.  This page also offers some tips for teaching research and our extensive Plagiarism Self Test which concludes with a completion certificate that your students can print, sign, and submit to you as proof that they understand the rules for ethical documentation.

Our mini-courses on sentence-level errors are also quite useful, particularly for students who make consistent types of grammatical errors. (Please remember that the WaLC's tutoring sessions are NOT proofreading sessions; while we do assist students with patterns of error and help them learn the rules, we will not "red pen" a paper or provide copyediting services.)

If you feel your entire class needs help with an assignment or writing issue, the WaLC offers a selection of in-class workshops.

Instructors are not permitted to send an entire class to the WaLC for writing tutoring.  Doing so overloads our appointment book and may cause students to be resistant or uncooperative clients.  Instead, ask us to visit your class (see above), and/or let us help you identify specific students who need individual attention from our tutors.  If you would like your entire class to have consistent writing tutoring, consider applying to our Writing Fellows program, which places dedicated tutors exclusively with one course for an entire semester.
