School of Music to present "Sounds of the Season" on Dec. 7
11/25/2008 - The Percussion Ensemble, directed by Mario Gaetano, professor of percussion.

The Percussion Ensemble, directed by Mario Gaetano, professor of percussion, will play the Dec. 7 concert "Sounds of the Season."

Western Carolina University’s School of Music will present the holiday concert “Sounds of the Season” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Fine and Performing Arts Center on Western’s campus.

Faculty and students from the School of Music will collaborate for the recital, performing a variety of holiday music, including traditional Christmas and Hanukkah songs. “The concert has something for everyone, from Renaissance instrumental and vocal selections to the hip-hop influenced ‘Santa’s in the House,’” said Dan Cherry, assistant professor of music at WCU. “Time-honored holiday classics will intermingle with children’s favorites, jazz arrangements, brass fanfares, large band and choral works, and an audience sing-along featuring Santa himself.”

Students will perform in small ensembles, as well as in the university’s choral groups, including the University Chorus, the Concert Choir and the Inspirational Choir. The Early Music Ensemble will perform in traditional Renaissance costumes. WCU’s Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble also will take part.

Selected faculty members will participate in a recorder consort, and the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet also will perform. Bill Martin, associate professor of voice, will sing “O Holy Night” as a tenor soloist with WCU’s Wind Ensemble.

“Children of all ages will enjoy this energetic, fast-paced concert featuring a wide variety of musical selections from the talented student and faculty performers,” said Cherry. “Unlike a traditional ‘staged’ concert, performers will be stationed in a variety of locations throughout the beautiful concert hall of the Fine and Performing Arts Center.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and children. Proceeds from the event will go to the School of Music’s scholarship fund.
