Western Carolina University’s University Chorus, Early Music Ensemble and Concert Choir will present a School of Music concert at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in the recital hall of Coulter Building on Western’s campus.
The first section of the program will feature the 58 voices of the University Chorus. The chorus will be accompanied by Carmen Ramsey, freshman music education major at WCU. Robert Holquist, WCU School of Music professor, will conduct and Cynthia Smith, a WCU graduate student in vocal performance, will be assistant conductor. The chorus will perform popular and show tunes, including “Popular” from “Wicked,” “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables,” “In The Wee Hours of the Morning” and “Calendar Girl.”
The second segment will feature the 15 a cappella voices of the Early Music Ensemble. The ensemble will present three selections form the 16th century – “El Grillo” by Des Prez, “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” by Praetorius and the anonymous Spanish carol “Sweet Virgin Mary.” The group also will perform a modern arrangement by Shaw and Parker of the carol “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
The third portion will feature the 48 voices of the Concert Choir, which will be accompanied by Abigail Roper, freshman music education major at WCU. Holquist will conduct, assisted by Heather Hallmark, a WCU graduate student in vocal performance. The chorus will sing German songs of love and nature by Mendelssohn, Schubert and Brahms, and an opera chorus by Verdi. The opera chorus will feature solos by School of Music faculty performers Bradley Martin, assistant professor; Mary Kay Bauer, associate professor; and Holquist.
The program will end with a grand finale, which will be performed by the combined choirs. Together, they will sing “Gloria in Excelsis” from 12th Mass by Mozart and “The Awakening” by Joseph Martin.
The concert is free and open to the public.
