Admissions Scholarships – Merit & Need Base

Pilar Apodaca.  This fund was established to provide a scholarship with preference to Hispanic American students. To be eligible the student must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A..

Mr. and Mrs. John W. Ashe Scholarship.  This fund was established by a bequest from the estate of Beulah Ashe Ensley in honor and memory of her parents. Awards are for students from Jackson or Haywood counties who demonstrate financial need.

The Deborah J. Bardo Employee Scholarship Fund.  The purpose of this fund shall be to provide support for entering Western Carolina University students who have proven themselves to be academically deserving. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit and need to entering students who are children or grandchildren of current University employees.

The Thomas W. Bird Scholarship Fund.  Established by a bequest from the estate of Thomas W. Bird, this fund supports needy and deserving students.

Bruce Blankenship Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship program provides financial support for students pursuing a college education while working full-time. Priority consideration is given to students studying psychology, social work, business administration, or curricula in the Department of Human Services.

The Nicholas and Grady Justice Bonarrigo Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support to students who have graduated from a Western North Carolina high school (Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Cherokee, Swain, Henderson, Transylvania, Graham, or Madison). Candidates will be considered on the basis of financial need, academic qualifications, and overall achievements.

Robert A. “Art” Byrd Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund was established through the generosity of the friends and family of Robert A. “Art” Byrd in his memory. The scholarship provides financial support for students who graduated from a McDowell County public high school and whose current permanent residence is in McDowell County, North Carolina.

The Dr. Fred R. and Berniece H. Cain Scholarship Fund.   Dr. Fred R. and Berniece H. Cain created this scholarship to assist students in obtaining a degree from Western Carolina University. Preference is given to Macon County residents.

Ed and Nell Caldwell.   Paul and Cecelia Caldwell have established this fund in honor of Paul’s parents, Ed and Nell Caldwell to help disadvantaged students in Western North Carolina obtain their college education.

The Catawba County Christian Business and Professional Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund provides financial support for entering freshmen. Preference will be given to a student from Catawba County, NC, with first preference given to candidates from Hickory High School and St. Stephens High School. Though no student is excluded from consideration of this award regardless of faith, candidates shall be considered based on their demonstration of the highest standards of moral character, including those exemplified by traditional Christian principles.

Katherine Causey Award.  This award provides financial support for women who graduated from high schools in Alamance, Guilford, and Randolph Counties or counties west of the above-named counties in North Carolina and who are majoring in biology or English.

Homer Ray Davis Scholarship.  This scholarship was established to honor Homer Ray Davis, the son of Sue Morgan Davis of Jackson County. It provides scholarship assistance on a need basis to students from Jackson, Swain, and Macon Counties.

Craig and Denise Dubow.  Craig and Denise Dubow have established an endowed fund to provide scholarship support for deserving students at Western Carolina University. This scholarship provides support for full time undergraduate students from Jackson, Macon, and Transylvania counties who demonstrate financial need and maintain a B average. The Gannett Foundation has contributed to this fund.

Winston A. Felts Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships honoring Winston Felts are awarded to students from Mitchell County who are majoring in music or teacher education on the basis of academic achievement, overall civic and social activities and contributions, and financial need.

Ulysses H. Ferguson Family Scholarships.  This endowment honors the memory of Edna Ferguson Rogers, an outstanding, dedicated teacher. It supports awards for students from Haywood County on the basis of financial need.

Mary Woods Flintom Scholarships.  This endowment, honoring a former staff member, provides scholarships on the basis of overall social, civic, and academic achievement and potential, as well as financial need.

The Henry Galloway Scholarship.  To provide support to students majoring in undergraduate education programs and have graduated from a western North Carolina high school (Burke County and west).

Gerri Wright Garrett Scholarship.  This scholarship is designed to assist female students from Swain, Graham, and Macon counties attending Western Carolina University. Preference will be shown to non-traditional students from Swain County who demonstrate financial need.

The Sam Gibson Scholarship.  This renewable scholarship, established by Charles Yandell, a close personal friend of Sam Gibson, provides support for education students attending Western Carolina University. Selection is based on the combination of financial need, academic qualifications, and overall achievements.

L. Milton Hauser Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Elementary or Middle Grades Education, with a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship amount varies (up to $500) per academic year.

Linda Jones Hudson Gilbert Scholarship.  This scholarship assists students from Western North Carolina in obtaining a degree in education. Selection will be based on demonstrated financial need. Preference will be shown to first generation college students.

The William Wilson “Pop” and Nancy Goodson Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship was established to honor  “Pop”  and Nancy Goodson. They were both educators in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. This scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students majoring in education. Candidates will be considered on the basis of academic qualifications and achievements.

The Beverly D. Hairfield, Jr. Scholarship.  To provide support to a deserving student(s) who graduated from a high school in Avery, Burke, Caldwell or McDowell Counties, NC.

Haywood County Western Alumni Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships are awarded to Pisgah and Tuscola High School graduates as recommended by high school counselors on the basis of financial need.

Adah C. and Horatio Helder Scholarship.  This scholarship was established to provide financial  assistance to worthy students who are residents of Haywood County, NC.

The Lester C. Henderson Scholarship.  To provide support to full-time WCU student who graduated from Macon, Clay, or Cherokee county high schools and are in need of financial assistance.

Dillard Hooper Scholarship.  Established through a bequest from the estate of Louise Hooper, this scholarship will be awarded annually on the basis of financial need to two students from Jackson County who attend Western Carolina University.

The H. T. and Glen Weaver Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund was established through the generosity of Miss Marthlou Hunter, a 1930 graduate of Western. Ms. Hunter’s father, Hiram T. Hunter, was president of Western from 1920 until his death in 1946. Preference is given to entering freshmen on the basis of financial need, and renewals depend upon satisfactory progress.

Wallace Hyde Scholarship Fund.  Established by Mrs. Hyde in honor of her husband, this scholarship fund provides financial assistance to qualified and deserving high school graduates residing in Graham County or surrounding counties.

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship.  To provide support to a student who graduated from a Jackson County, NC, high school, preferably, and who is affiliated (a member or immediate family member) with the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

Jackson County Western Alumni Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund was established by the alumni and friends of Western Carolina University in Jackson County to provide financial support for deserving young Jackson County students in baccalaureate degree programs at Western. Scholarship recipients are selected from Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain High Schools on the basis of financial need and other criteria.

Leger Family.  This scholarship fund is being established and funded by the family of the late John Alfred Leger of Rutherford College, NC, to provide support for deserving Western Carolina Students who are intending to major in either nursing or teacher education baccalaureate degree program.

John Sam and Zonell McPhail Lay Endowment.  Established by the John Sam Lay Trust, this scholarship provides financial support for students from South Carolina who are attending Western Carolina University.

Ernest C. McCracken Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships provide awards based on financial need and overall social, civic, and academic achievement and potential.

Joan and Malcolm MacNeill Merit Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for full-time, degree seeking undergraduate students. Candidates must be in good standing and will be considered on the basis of their overall academic merit.

The Macon Bank Scholarship Fund.  The purpose of this fund is to provide support for outstanding students from the North Carolina counties served directly by Macon Savings Bank, currently Macon, Cherokee, Clay, Henderson, Jackson, and Transylvania.

Belinda Morse.  This scholarship was established in 1997 by Belinda Morse, a graduate of Western Carolina University, to provide support for first-generation college students from North Carolina.

The Mountaineer/Josephus Daniels Scholarship Award.  Established by the Josephus Daniels Charitable Foundation for students from the primary circulation area of the Enterprise Mountaineer newspaper.  Eligibility is based upon academic record, potential for continued achievement, successful participation in school-sponsored activities, leadership ability and potential, social and civic contributions, and need.

Clyde M. Norton Scholarships.  This endowment, established by the Norton family, honors the memory of Clyde Norton, an outstanding leader in business and public affairs in Western North Carolina. The fund provides support for students from McDowell County.

F. F. Pollard Endowment Scholarship Fund.  The purpose of this Fund shall be to provide one full tuition and fees scholarship for an incoming or returning academically deserving student. The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit with preference given to those meritorious students demonstrating financial need.

The Brank and Juanita Farmer Proffitt Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship was established by Mrs. Juanita Proffitt in honor of her husband, Dr. Brank Proffitt, to assist students originally from Madison County with their efforts to obtain a degree from Western Carolina University.

The Leone Hyde Ray Scholarship.  The family of Leone Hyde Ray established this endowed fund to provide scholarship support for education students attending Western Carolina University. This scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating high school senior from Graham County who has an interest in becoming a classroom teacher.

The Bobby S. and Anne B. Robinson Scholarship Fund.  Established through the generosity of the I.L. Long Construction Company in Winston-Salem, this scholarship is to provide support for incoming freshmen from McDowell County or Swain County High Schools who demonstrate financial need.

The Sandlin-Morris Scholarship.  This endowed fund provides scholarship support for students from Haywood, Jackson, or Swain counties. Selection will be based on a combination of financial need, academic qualifications, and overall achievements.

The Willie Lou and Jessie Burton Shields Scholarship Fund .  Emma Jean Shields Bradley, Dorothy Shields Griffin and Howard Shields have established and endowed fund in honor of their parents to provide scholarship support for deserving students at Western Carolina University. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist students from Cherokee County North Carolina in their efforts to obtain a degree from WCU.

Lewis J. Smith Scholarship Fund.  These endowed scholarships, which honor Lewis J. Smith, a founder of the Cullowhee School and the first chairman of the board of trustees of Cullowhee School, are awarded to students majoring in history or education on the basis of financial need and other criteria.

C.D. Spangler Jr. Scholarship for Minority Students.  This endowed scholarship program’s purpose is to provide financial support for deserving young minority students. Awards are based upon high academic achievement, successful participation in various school activities, overall social and civic contributions, and financial need.

The Elizabeth Thompson Scholarship.  Established by Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson, this renewable scholarship is designated to assist education majors in attending Western Carolina University.

The Curtis L. and Brenda C. Wellmon Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship, established by the Weldon’s, provides support to graduates of East Burke High School in Icard, North Carolina, who demonstrate financial need.

Development Office Scholarships

The Cullowhee High School Alumni Scholarship Fund.  This fund was established by alumni of Cullowhee High School to assist former students or relatives of former students, faculty, and staff of Cullowhee High in attending Western Carolina University. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and be approved by the Cullowhee High School scholarship committee. Contact the Development Office.

The Charles O. Frazier Endowed Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support to an incoming freshman enrolled in a full-time, degree-seeking course of study. Preference will be given to a graduate of Franklin High School, Franklin, NC, who has demonstrated financial need. Contact the Development Office.

Office of Financial Aid Scholarships – Merit & Need Based

Nell M. Leatherwood Scholarships.  This endowment provides scholarships, renewable for four years, to help deserving students of Swain County. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors.

State Employees’ Association of North Carolina Scholarships.  State employees, their spouses, and their children who have financial need and demonstrate academic potential are eligible for these awards. Students are nominated by their High School.

Dr. A. P. and Frances Dickson Scholarships.  A scholarship is awarded annually to a fulltime undergraduate student who currently resides in Hoke County, North Carolina. Recipients are chosen by the financial aid office on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

R. Kirk Landon Graduate Student Scholarship.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for full-time, degree seeking students in a Masters Degree program. Preference will be given to qualified students from Haywood County, NC. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

James Lee Love Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time North Carolina resident undergraduate student. Recipients are chosen by the financial aid office on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

The Lawrence and Geneva Ramsey Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in 1998 by Mylie Ramsey in memory of Lawrence and Geneva Ramsey. It provides support for Jackson County students who are rising Western Carolina University juniors. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Paul A. Reid and Paul A. Reid Surry County Scholarships.  Grants are available to graduates of Surry County high schools to attend Western Carolina University either as undergraduate or graduate students. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

The St. David's Award.  Established by Carl Richard Hill and the vestry of Saint David’s Episcopal Church of Cullowhee, this fund provides financial support to deserving young people who have earned an associate degree at Southwestern Community College and who desire to pursue a baccalaureate degree program at Western Carolina University. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

C.M. and M.D. Suther Scholarships.  These nonrenewable scholarships are awarded annually to North Carolina resident undergraduate students on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

The Varner Scholarship.  This endowment fund supports scholarships for high school students from Swain County. Contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Honors College Scholarships

College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships

Glaxo Women in Science Scholarship.  The Glaxo Women in Science Scholars endowed scholarship is established to provide scholarships for full-time women students at WCU. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to recognize outstanding scholarship, to provide an incentive for women science students to enter the science professions, and to provide students with a woman scientist mentor at Glaxo Inc. Contact the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Jessie Siler Sloan and George Neville Sloan Scholarship.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for juniors in the College of Arts and Sciences based on academic achievement and financial need. Preference is given to residents of Macon County, North Carolina. Contact the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Department of Biology Scholarships

The Anatasia ‘Stacy’ O’Connell Research Scholarship.  A scholarship will be awarded from the Stacy O’Connell Scholarship and Research Fund to a student majoring in Biology at Western Carolina University. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to a Junior or Senior student with interests in pursuing further study in fields related to breast cancer. The student is also expected to work with a faculty member on a project related to cancer research, including but not limited to molecular genetics, immunology, or the ecology of disease.

Biology Department Scholarship Fund.  This endowment, established by the faculty of the WCU Department of Biology, supports scholarships for biology students at Western Carolina University. Contact the head of the Department of Biology.

The J. Gerald Eller Scholarship Fund.  This fund was established by friends, colleagues, and former students in honor of Dr J. Gerald Eller, who retired from WCU in 1983.  This scholarship is to provide support for science students who are competition winners in the annual WCU Science Festival. 

The Ramsey Family Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship established in memory of Dr. Donald Ramsey, a Sylva optometrist, provides a full tuition award to a junior majoring in one of the preprofessional health sciences. Contact the head of the biology department.

The John and Elisabeth Rice Scholarship Fund.  Students who have declared a major and are working in a biology program of study are eligible for consideration. Contact the head of the biology department

Don Yopp Scholarship.  Will be awarded during the spring semester to biology majors who show promise of a successful career in biology.  Selection of the scholarship recipients will be based on academic achievement and involvement in school and extracurricular activities.  All biology majors who have completed at least 30 semester hours are invited to apply.

Department of Chemistry Scholarships

James L. Breece Scholarship.  Established by James L. Breece, this scholarship fund provides support for a student who has graduated from a Western North Carolina high school, is majoring in chemistry, and is academically and financially in need of a scholarship. Dr. James Breece grew up in Waynesville, North Carolina and was a 1967 graduate of Western Carolina University. Contact the head of the chemistry department. One (1) award to a chemistry major from one of the following western mountain counties:  Madison, Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Transylvania, Jackson, Swain, Macon, Graham, Clay, or Cherokee.  The awardee will be chosen on the basis of academic qualifications, overall achievements, and financial need.   Preference will be given to upperclassmen; however, freshmen and sophomores with exceptional ability will be considered.

Frank H. Brown Family Scholarships.  This endowment, which honors the long-time relationship of the Frank H. Brown family with Western Carolina University, provides awards to chemistry students. Selection is based on scholastic attainments and capabilities, character, and overall potential. Contact the head of the chemistry department. Five (5) awards of varying amounts to students from the western mountain counties (Madison, Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Transylvania, Jackson, Swain, Macon, Graham, Clay, Cherokee, Yancy, Mitchell, Watauga, Ashe, and Avery).  Awardees must have an overall GPA of 2.50 or higher, with a 3.00 GPA in the major field.  Preference will be given to chemistry and physics majors.   

Frank H Brown Sr. Trust Scholarship.  Established  through the generosity of the Brown Family this scholarship provides support for undergraduate students who graduated from high school in the western mountain counties of North Carolina. Students who have declared a major in Chemistry will receive first priority in eligibility for consideration. Students who have declared a major in the sciences will receive second priority in eligibility for consideration. Contact the Department of Chemistry. Three (3) awards to chemistry and physics majors with an overall GPA of 3.00.

Glaxo Women in Science Scholars Endowment.  One (1) award—half of it will be applied to each semester—accompanied by loan of a laptop computer and printer and interaction with professional chemists at Glaxco Wellcome in Research Triangle Park.  The awardee must be female and must have and maintain an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.

Department of Communication Scholarships

Patrick Lee Carmody Scholarship Fund.  This memorial scholarship fund provides financial support for qualified students majoring in communication (radio and television). The awards are based on academic achievement, civic and social activity, and contributions to student programs and activities. Contact the Department of Communication.

Roy A. Taylor ScholarshipsScholarship is awarded to a rising senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in human communication (formally speech) with consideration given to a rising junior meeting the same criteria if there are no seniors meeting the requirements.

Department of English Scholarships

The Kim L. Brown Award for Excellence in Tutoring.  To provide support to a student(s) selected by the Director of the Writing Center in consultation with the Chairman, Department of English.

Crum Scholarship Fund.  This endowed scholarship fund was established in honor of Joseph and Mabel Crum, former members of the Western Carolina University faculty. The fund provides support for undergraduate Mathematics majors and English majors. Contact the appropriate department.

Department of History Scholarships

Solon H and Mary Conn Bryan.  Established in 1982 by T. Conn  Bryan and Virginia Bryan Schreiber in memory of their parents Solon H. and Mary Conn Bryan. Dr. Conn Bryan was a member of the WCU History faculty.

Billy and Ruth Hice Scholarships.  Established in memory of Billy and Ruth Hice, this scholarship fund supports students who are pursuing a degree in history. Contact the head of the history department.

The History Department Academic Excellence.  Established by the faculty in the Department of History, these scholarship awards are for students planning to pursue a major in history. Consideration for scholarship will be based on merit. Contact the history department.

Alice Mathews Scholarship Fund.  This endowed scholarship fund was established to honor a former member of the WCU faculty, Dr. Alice Mathews. The fund provides support for deserving history majors with priority consideration given to students with a 4.0 GPA. Contact the history department.

The Lucy Ann Nordyke Fellowship Fund.  This scholarship was established by Martha Jean Rice in memory of her grandmother, Lucy Ann Nordyke, who was born in 1861 in the Cherokee Nation West. Scholarship support is provided for students pursuing a master’s degree in history and performing research in Cherokee Indian Studies. First priority is given to Cherokee Indians and Cherokee descendants. Contact the head of the history department.

The Sarah J. and Max R. Williams Scholarship.  To provide support to students majoring in history. Preference will be given to graduate students. Contact the Head of the Department.

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Scholarships

George A. Milton Scholarship.  Awarded to undergraduate students majoring in Mathematics or Mathematics Education. Applicants must have scored at least a 550 on the mathematics portion of the SAT or an equivalent score on a comparable test and maintained at least a “B” average in all high school mathematics courses. Proffitt's Pecuniary Propitiousness Protocol.  The purpose of this fund is to recognize and assist those majoring in Computer Science who have shown themselves academically worthy and have proven themselves deserving. Contact Mark Holliday at holliday@email.wcu.edu.

Crum Scholarship Fund.  This endowed scholarship fund was established in honor of Joseph and Mabel Crum, former members of the Western Carolina University faculty. The fund provides support for undergraduate Mathematics majors and English majors. Contact the appropriate department.

Department of Political Science Scholarships

The Channing C. Carpenter Scholarship Fund.  This endowment was established by friends and family of Dr. Chan Carpenter, who joined the WCU faculty in 1967. Dr. Carpenter taught constitutional law and American government sub-specialties such as the presidency. He was selected SGA’s “Man of the Year” in 1969. The Charles J. Stevens Scholarship Fund.  This endowment was established by friends and family of Dr. Charles Stevens, who taught international politics courses and served as the head of the Department.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for a rising junior or senior Political Science major who has demonstrated an interest in international relations.  Contact the head of the Department of Political Science.

College of Business Scholarships

Advertising Federation of Western North Carolina Scholarship Fund.  The membership of the Advertising Federation of WNC established this fund to promote advertising careers and to support worthy and deserving students who are pursuing courses in advertising/marketing in the College of Business. In addition, the membership intends for the Fund to perpetuate public recognition of the Advertising Federation of Western North Carolina for its significant contribution to the education of young people. Criteria: (1) Marketing major (2) Rising, entering, or enrolled juniors and seniors (3) Resident of North Carolina (4) Academic achievement (5) Participation in social, civic, and school activities (6) Preference given to students who have demonstrated evidence of need for financial support (7) Renewable one time.

Alumni and Friends. During the 1997-98 academic year the College of Business dedicated all contributions from its annual phonathon toward establishing an endowed scholarship. Contributions from alumni and friends totaled $10,851.70, which formed the corpus for the endowment fund. Interest from this endowment will perpetually fund a yearly scholarship. As the endowment grows, so grows the size of the scholarship. Criteria: (1) Undergraduate Business Major (2) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA in major) (3) Evidence of participation in student affairs.

The John Beegle Scholarship.  John Beegle has been a faculty member at WCU since 1972. Professor Beegle served as Head of the Accountancy Department and Interim Dean of the College of Business. The scholarship was established in honor of his many years of dedicated service to the university and to the accounting profession. Criteria: (1) Graduating senior entering the Master of Accountancy program (2) Will have completed at least sixty hours of coursework for BSBA degree at WCU (3) Academic merit (4) Financial need (4) Civic and extracurricular activities

BETA GAMMA SIGMA Scholarship. As an AACSB accredited institution, the WCU college of business is eligible to sponsor a chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honorary society of AACSB. Provided our chapter meets yearly minimum guidelines on membership levels and participating members, the national office of Beta Gamma Sigma offers the chapter a $500 scholarship challenge grant. If the college will contribute $500, the national office will match our contribution to bring the total amount of the scholarship award to $1,000. Criteria: (1) Business major or graduate student (2) Student must be a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (3) Academic achievement (4) Community service

Xena Bristol Forsyth Scholarships. This scholarship was established by Mrs. Ruth Forsyth of Murphy, NC (Cherokee County) in honor and memory of Xena Bristol Forsyth. The Fund also honors the achievements of William Frank Forsyth, son of William Thomas Forsyth and Xena Bristol Forsyth. Mr. W. Frank Forsyth was a successful banker and businessman, a distinguished state senator, and a dedicated trustee and friend of WCU. His dedication and commitment to the region are symbolized in the W. Frank Forsyth Building, home of the College of Business, on the campus of Western. Criteria: (1) Business major (2) Rising or entering juniors and seniors (3) Resident of North Carolina (4) Preference to students from counties of: Cherokee, Clay, Graham (5) Achievement and activities in previous schooling (6) Social, civic, and academic achievement and potential (7) Renewable (subject to satisfactory academic progress) until completion of degree program.

Timothy and Betsy Gillespie Scholarship.  Dr. Timothy Gillespie is a WCU Chemistry graduate who practices dentistry in Asheville, while Betsy is a WCU CIS graduate. The Gillespie’s have three sons. Reflecting back to their education at Western, both Tim and Betsy believe the university was instrumental in helping them achieve success in their careers and happiness in their lives. David McKee Hall Jr. Scholarships.  This scholarship was established in honor and memory of David McKee Hall, Jr. Mr. Hall, a native of Sylva, practiced law in Jackson County, and at the time of his death in 1960 was a congressman. He attended Jackson County schools and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its law school. Criteria: (1) Business law major (2) Resident of North Carolina (3) Preference to students from 11th Congressional District which includes the counties of: Buncombe, Henderson, Rutherford, Cherokee, Jackson, Swain, Clay Macon, Transylvania, Cleveland, Madison, Yancey, Graham, McDowell, Haywood, Polk (4) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA in major), leadership ability and potential, civic and social activities and contributions, and moral character.

Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina Scholarship Fund.  The IIANC is a non-profit organization that distributes its yearly profits to benefit the people of North Carolina. One arm of its philanthropy has been to support higher education through scholarships. This gift is intended to help students who are pursuing careers in insurance, risk management, or general business. Tim Laney, president of the IIANC, donated the money on behalf of his organization. Criteria: (1) Finance major, especially student who has taken (or plans to take) either FIN 400 (Insurance Planning) or FIN 401 (Life Insurance) (2) Full-time student who is a rising senior (3) Resident of North Carolina (4) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA in major) (5) Evidence of participation in student activities.

Jay I. Kneedler ScholarshipsMary and Jay Kneedler established this scholarship in recognition of the dedicated service and commitment to the education of young people that had been evident in their careers. Jay Kneedler served as a faculty member in the (then) School of Business at WCU for 10 years. He also served as faculty sponsor for the student chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Management. Prior to joining Western, Mr. Kneedler had an extensive career as a manufacturing engineer with Westinghouse. Charles and Clifton Lambreth. Charles and Clifton Lambreth of Asheville, North Carolina, have established this scholarship to provide support for WCU students majoring in business who have proven themselves to be academically deserving. Renewals may be considered for a maximum of two award years. Criteria: (1) Full time undergraduate student (2) Business major (3) Junior or Senior (4) Academic merit (5) Civic involvement.

Dean Martin Scholarship.  Dr. M. Dean Martin was a former faculty member in the College of Business, after a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force. He taught primarily management and marketing courses, served on the steering committee for the formation of the Master in Project Management degree, and was instrumental in the establishment of WCU's Beta Gamma Sigma chapter. The intent of the Martin family is to honor the memory of Dr. Martin and his commitment to the development and education of young minds. Criteria: (1) Management or marketing major (2) Academic achievement (at least 3.25 GPA) (3) Evidence of participation in student affairs (4) Full-time student.

The James William Pearce Scholarship Fund.  This fund was established in memory of Dr. James William Pearce, who was an active member of the management faculty. Criteria: (1) Management major (2) Rising senior (3) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA) (4) Significant service activities (5) Recipient to be selected by management faculty.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE – METROLINA Chapter Scholarship.  The Project Management Institute – Metrolina Chapter has established an endowed fund to provide scholarship support for project management graduate students who have proven themselves to be academically deserving. Criteria: (1) Enrolled in Masters of Project Management program (2) Academic merit (3) Financial need (3) Civic involvement.

Bronce and Betty Ray Scholarships.  Bronce and Betty Ray were residents of Charlotte and became aware of WCU through the Flinton family. Their intent was to support deserving young students from the mountain counties of North Carolina who wished to complete a baccalaureate degree at Western. Criteria: (1) Business major (2) High school graduate from counties of: Alleghany, Graham, Mitchell, Ashe, Haywood, Swain, Avery, Henderson, Transylvania, Buncombe, Jackson, Watauga, Cherokee, Macon, Yancey, Clay, Madison (3) Other considerations: academic achievement, successful participation in school activities, social and civic contributions, and financial worthiness (4) Renewable (up to 3 times) for recipients who maintain a 3.0 GPA in the major and 2.5 GPA overall.

Freda Rayburn Undergraduate ScholarshipFreda Russell Rayburn was a 1969 graduate of WCU with a degree in business education. She taught for 10 years in the public schools and then in 1980 founded Rayburn Home Construction, Inc. As president, she was one of the first female homebuilders in Greenville, SC. The Ed and Bertha Henson Reed Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in memory of Ed and Bertha Henson Reed who were lifelong residents of Jackson County. Bertha Henson Reed graduated from the Cullowhee State Normal and Industrial School (now WCU) in 1908 and taught public school in Jackson County for 18 years. Ed Reed was a Jackson County businessman. Criteria: (1) Full time student (2) Business major (3) Jr. or Sr. status (4) Academic achievement (5) Financial need (6) Preference given to Jackson County high school graduates.

Ted and Frances Reese ScholarshipFrances and Ted Reese own an independent insurance agency in Hendersonville, NC. Ted was born and raised in Canton, NC. His father, George, attended WCU in the early 1900s when Western was known as the Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School. The Reuses believe that education, community service, and marketing skills are critical success factors in one's career. Criteria: (1) Marketing major (2) Full-time student who is a rising senior (3) Resident of North Carolina (4) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA in major) (5) Evidence of participation in student affairs.

Steve and Linda Reese Scholarship. Steve and Linda Reese of Denver, North Carolina, have established this scholarship to assist students in obtaining a business degree from Western Carolina University. Criteria: (1) Full time student (2) Business major (3) 2.75 GPA (4) Financial need (5) Recipient receives no athletic scholarship.

Laura and Phillip Sherrill Scholarship.  Laura and Phillip Sherrill live in Charlotte, NC, and have one daughter, Hannah. Phillip graduated from WCU in 1978 with a degree in business administration. Currently, he is executive vice president/treasurer of SteelFab, Inc. The Sherrill’s attribute much of their success to a solid college education and are proud to support future Western graduates with their gift. Criteria: (1) Business major (or preference to finance majors) (2) Full-time student who is a rising senior (3) Resident of North Carolina (4) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA in major) (5) Evidence of participation in student affairs.

Duncan Tye Scholarship.  This scholarship was established through the efforts of Dr. John Wade, head of the economics, finance, and international business department at WCU and Mr. Bill Tye, brother of Duncan Tye who died unexpectedly in 1997. Professor Duncan Tye taught 20 years at Western and his Econ 303 (Money, Banking, and Financial Markets) course was legendary. Family, friends, and former students contributed to this Fund to honor Dr. Tye. Criteria: (1) Economics or finance major (2) Full-time student who is a rising senior (3) Academic achievement (at least 3.0 GPA in major) (4) Evidence of participation in student affairs.

Mary and Charles Wayte Graduate Scholarship FundThis Fund honors the late Mary Smallwood Wayte, professor emeritus of education at WCU and her husband, the late Charles Fred Wayte, a professor of business at WCU. The intent of the donors was to provide scholarships for graduate students in business and education to cover out-of-state tuition, fees, and room and board. Criteria: (1) Fully admitted graduate student in business (2) Student who is pursuing MBA with a focus in accounting, CIS, marketing, or management (3) Preference to out-of-state students (4) Full-time student (nine or more graduate hours).

Sports Management Student Professional Association Scholarship.  Awarded annually to a currently enrolled Sports Management major who is dedicated to the field and active in the association. A  G.P.A. of 2.70 is required to maintain the scholarship.

College of Education and Allied Professions Scholarships

Taft B. and Malvery Botner Scholarships.  Annual awards are made to academically outstanding students to pursue careers in elementary education and reading. Scholarships are renewable depending upon academic performance and continued promise of success in teaching. Apply in person at the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. The Capps Family Memorial Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support for middle grade education students. Candidates must have graduated from a high school in one of the 17 western most NC counties, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have validated financial need. Applications may be picked up in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. The deadline to apply is December 1st each year.

District I, North Carolina Retired School Personnel Senior Scholarship.  This scholarship will be awarded annually to a rising senior in the College of Education and Allied Professions who is a resident of one of the thirteen Western North Carolina counties. Applications are available in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee.

The Linda Reep Lankford Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship, established by Jesse R. Lankford in memory of his wife, Linda Reep Lankford, provides assistance to students majoring in elementary or middle grades education. Applications may be picked up in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. The deadline to apply is December 1st each year.

The John Donivan Hales/Jessie Lindsay Scholarship Fund.  This fund was established by Jessie Lindsay Hales in memory of her husband, John Donivan Hales. Awards are made to students who are residents of Swain County and who have expressed an intention to major in elementary education. Applications may be picked up in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. The deadline to apply is December 1st each year.

The Morrill Family Memorial Fund.  This memorial fund provides financial support for graduate students conducting research related to improving teaching. Contact the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee.

Hoyt and Lora Ponder Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in 1999 in honor of Hoyt and Lora to encourage competent individuals to enter the undergraduate program in Birth-Kindergarten (B-K). Mary Morrow / Edna Richards Scholarship.  Awarded by the North Carolina Association in the amount of $1000 for evidence of promise as a successful teacher, scholastic achievement and financial need, this scholarship requires nomination from an academic department at Western Carolina University. To be eligible, students must be majoring in education and college juniors at the time of application. Applications are available in the Office of Special Programs G22 McKee. The deadline to apply is December 1st of each year.

The Daniel Saddler Scholarship.  Established by the family of Daniel L. Saddler, this scholarship provides support for graduate level counseling students. Dan Saddler, a professor and counselor trainer at Western Carolina University from 1972 until 1989, used his extraordinary insight to encourage students to reach their full potential as counselors and individuals. Jane B. Schulz Scholarship.  The purpose of the Jane B. Schulz Scholarship Fund is to provide financial assistance to late entry students (initial entrance into college at least two calendar years after high school graduation) who express interest in the Special Education Major.  Contact the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee.

The Stephanie Ann Stow Scholarship Fund.  The family of Stephanie Ann Stow has established this memorial fund to provide scholarships to support education students who are doing their student teaching. Preference is given to students from Asheville High School or other Buncombe County high schools. Contact the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee.

The Rachel R. Williams Sweet Scholarship Fund.  The fund has been established for the purpose of honoring Rachel R. Williams Sweet, a 1935 graduate of Western Carolina University, and to provide financial support to undergraduate students who have expressed an intention to pursue early childhood education as their major course of study. The “Little E.J.” Whitmire Scholarship Fund.  This fund, established by Blanton and E. J. Whitmire in honor of the son of E.J. and Genevieve Whitmire, provides support for students majoring in special education. Applications may be picked up in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. Myrtle Olivia Whitmire Scholarships.  Students who are residents of North Carolina and who are planning careers in early childhood education are eligible for annual awards. . Department of Psychology Scholarships

The Linda Elaine Glenn Scholarship.   This scholarship is in memory of Linda Elaine Glen, who was a Psychology major at WCU at the time of her death. The scholarship recognizes a female undergraduate majoring in Psychology, and the recipient is selected by the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

The Lorraine Kronholm Stone Scholarship Fund.  This memorial fund was established to provide scholarship support primarily for “non-traditional” students majoring in studio art or art education. Contact the director of the school.

Josefina Niggli Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships honoring Josefina Niggli, distinguished playwright and teacher, are made to students majoring in theatre arts with established records of achievement in the WCU theatre. Contact the head of the Department of Stage and Screen.

The Maxie E. Beaver Award.  To provide support for the annual Outstanding Student Teacher in Music. Contact the Director of the School of Music.

The Mandy Buchanan and Daniel Ledford Music Scholarship Fund.  The families of Mandy Buchanan and Daniel Ledford established this memorial fund to provide scholarship support for students from Haywood County majoring in music who participate in Western’s marching band. The Barbara and James Dooley Music Award.  Established by Dr. and Mrs. James E. Dooley, this fund provides support for outstanding piano students. For more information, contact Director of the School of Music and the director of the WCU Concert Choir.

Inez Wooten Gulley Scholarships.  This endowment, honoring a former head of the music faculty, supports awards for music students. An audition is required. Contact the Director of the School of Music.

Jonathan Graham Pruett Scholarships.  This endowment, a memorial to a former student, supports scholarships to worthy students who are active in the music program. Preference is given to students from Surry County who are in the band. Contact the School of Music.

Richard and Marian Renfro Scholarships.  These endowed high school scholarships, which honor professors emeriti Richard and Marian Renfro, are awarded to students majoring in music education. Contact the Director of the School of Music.

The Otto Spilker Scholarship.  Established by friends and colleagues of Otto Spilker, Awarded each year to a graduate student in the Department of Health and Human Performance. The recipient must be full-time degree candidate in a graduate program in Health and Human Performance. Applications may be picked up in the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee. Wilma Cosper Scholarship.  This scholarship program provides financial support for deserving students who have declared a major in one of the academic programs in the Human Environmental Sciences. Contact the College of Health and Human Sciences.

The Antonio Bonarrigo Nursing Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship fund provides financial support to juniors or seniors in the nursing program. Candidates will be considered and recommended by a Nursing Department faculty scholarship committee. Contact the Department of Nursing.

Andrea Culpepper Scholarship Fund.  This memorial scholarship fund provides financial support for students enrolled in the nursing program. Contact the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Mary K Kneedler.  This scholarship was established in recognition of Mary Kneedler, former head of the Department of Nursing, for dedicated service and commitment to the education of young people.

Department of Clinical Laboratory Science Scholarships

Norma Brake Cook Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in honor of Norma Brake Cook who served as a Clinical Lab Sciences professor. Students must be accepted to and plan to participate in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program and demonstrate financial need. Contact the CLS Department

Kimmel School of Construction Management and Technology Scholarships

The Joshua Thomas Grooms Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship was established in the memory of Joshua Thomas Grooms, who was a student at Western. This fund is designated to assist industrial distribution juniors and seniors in pursuing their degree from WCU. The recipient must demonstrate financial need. The Mary Lee McAllister Scholarship.  To provide support to a rising junior or senior majoring in Electronics Engineering Technology. Contact the Head of the Industrial and Engineering Technology Department.

Jackson Paper Company.  Jackson Paper Company established two scholarships in 1998. These scholarships are to provide support for students majoring in the Environmental Health program and students majoring in the Industrial Distribution program. Preference is given to students who are residents of Western North Carolina.

Department of Athletics Scholarships

The Ronnie G. Childress Memorial Scholarship Fund.  This fund, established to support scholarships in baseball, honors the memory of Ronnie Childress. Ronnie, a 1970 WCU graduate, worked as a radio announcer at the family-owned radio station in Sylva. Contact the director of athletics.

The Odell Griffin Memorial.  To provide support to an outstanding pitcher on the Catamount baseball team. Contact the Department of Athletics.

The Dee Ann Jagger Memorial Scholarship.  To provide support for members of the women’s varsity tennis team. Selection will be based on academic achievement, talent, potential and overall participation in social, civic, and school activities. Preference will be given to upper-class students who have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or above and have expressed a desire to attend graduate school. Contact the WCU Tennis Coach.

The Betty Peele Leadership Fund.  To provide support to a female athlete who shows leadership on and off the court or field of play, and, who demonstrates excellence in and out of the classroom. Contact the Senior Women’s athletic Administrator of the WCU Athletic Department.

Charles B. Ross Jr. Golf Scholarship.  This scholarship was established in loving memory of Charles B. Ross Jr. Candidates must be contributing members of the intercollegiate golf teams and shall be considered on the basis of their integrity, financial need and academic qualifications. The Sue and Jack Wakeley Scholar-Athlete Award for Track, Field and Cross Country.  To provide support to a female and male athlete performing in track, field or cross country. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must have scored points in a Conference meet, or, in the most important meet of the year, should there be no Conference meets. The Bob Waters Leadership Fund.  To provide support for a graduate assistantship in football. Contact the Head Football Coach.

International Students Scholarships

Kendall W. King Scholarship Fund.  The purpose of this scholarship fund is to provide financial support for worthy and deserving international students. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for the award. Contact the Office of International Programs and Services for more information.

Albert Dudley Brewer Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships, supported by the Adelaide Louise Brewer Fund, provide assistance for students with impaired hearing. Contact the Office of Student Affairs

Gracie and David H. Brown Sr. Scholarships.  This endowment honors a former superintendent of Jackson County Schools and his wife, a Cullowhee community leader. Preference is given to visually impaired students. Contact the Office of Student Affairs.

The Dean Carroll Plemmons Scholarship Fund.  The fund has been established by the family of Dean Plemmons in recognition of his personal achievements and contributions to his profession and to society in general. The scholarship provides financial support for returning students whose records at Western Carolina University reflect sound accomplishment in the classroom, as well as successful participation in civic and social organizations. The Staff Forum Scholarship Fund.  The Staff Forum Scholarship Fund was established by the Western Carolina University Staff Forum to provide scholarship support for the children of SPA and EPA Non-Faculty employees. Contact the Office of Student Affairs.

Henry Lewis Suggs Award of Excellence.  Established in honor of Henry Suggs because of his significant contributions to Western Carolina University, his leadership in academia, and his commitment to excellence. The  Henry Lewis Suggs Award has been deemed as the highest and most distinguished award that can be received by an African-American student on the WCU campus.

Louise Mason Caldwell Scholarship Fund.  This endowed scholarship program provides financial support for Cherokee Indians to attend Western Carolina University. Contact the director of the WCU Cherokee Center.

Other Private Scholarships through the University

The Christopher Thomas Cash/Sigma Nu Fraternity Scholarship Fund.  This memorial fund was established to make awards to brothers of Kappa Phi Chapter at Western Carolina University. Contact the Sigma Nu fraternity scholarship committee.

Cullowhee School District Award.  This award program provides funds for graduates of the Cullowhee school district who desire to attend WCU. Selection is based on achievement, participation in various school
activities, overall social and civic contributions, and financial need. Contact the school counselor at Smoky Mountain High School.

The Delta Sigma Phi Alumni Scholarship.  To provide support for a current brother of the Delta Omicron Chapter who is in good standing. An application must be presented to the Delta Sigma Phi Scholarship Committee prior to the academic year of the award.

Horatio A. and Adah G. Helder Scholarships.  Graduates of public high schools in Haywood County who have financial need may receive scholarships to attend Western Carolina University. Each scholarship is renewable for four years. Contact a high school guidance counselor.

Marshall Hyde Scholarships.  These scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students from Graham County who have expressed an interest in horticulture, forestry, or environmental improvement. Contact the Graham County school superintendent.

McClure Scholarship Fund. Students from Western North Carolina are invited to apply for scholarship funds for their Freshman year. You must reside in one of the following counties: Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, Caldwell, Avery, Burke, Mitchell, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Transylvania, Buncombe, Yancey, Madison, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Graham, Clay, and Cherokee. Students must be admitted to WCU, have need based on FAFSA, academic promise and personal character. Application must be turned in to the Financial Aid office by June 15. The Jacob Spencer Medford Scholarship.  To provide support to a student participating in the Service Learning Program. Contact the Service Learning Advisory Committee.

The Raymond Edward Nelson Lambda Chi Alpha Scholarship Fund.  This fund provides scholarship support for deserving young brothers of the Lambda Chi Alpha, Beta Zeta Chapter of Western Carolina University. J.W. and Patricia Palmer Scholarships.  These endowed scholarships are awarded annually to students selected on the basis of academic achievement, civic and social activities, and leadership potential. Preference is given to residents of Clay County. Contact high school counselor.

Pi Kappa Alpha/Robert L. Waters Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship program is a memorial to Robert L. Waters for his outstanding leadership at Western Carolina University and in the Zeta Xi Chapter, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. The Richard Thomas Ruhlman/Sigma Nu Fraternity Scholarship Fund.  This endowed fund was established in memory of Richard Thomas Ruhlman, a former student at Western Carolina University. The purpose of the scholarship fund is to provide financial support to a qualified and deserving brother of the Sigma Nu Chapter at Western Carolina University. Doug Shirley Scholarship.  This fund has been established in memory of Doug Shirley who was a dedicated member of the Zeta Omicron Chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. This fund is designed to assist fellow "Tekes", their sons and grandsons. Students must demonstrate community and civic involvement and financial need. Contact the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
