I was very pleased to be the first Brewer Smith Distinguished Professor in WCU’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and I am now excited to continue my affiliation with the Department as Professor Emeritus. I will continue to teach occasional courses in aphasia and cognitive-communicative disorders, and pursue an active research agenda in these areas.
Throughout the course of my career, I was a faculty member with the Harold Goodglass Aphasia Research Center and Boston University School of Medicine for 32 years, a Research Scientist at the National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders at the University of Arizona, and a Research Professor at the University of North Carolina (I retain an adjunct position at UNC-CH). In addition to credentials with the American Speech and Hearing Association, I hold Board Certification with the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences, and I am Past President of ANCDS. My awards and recognitions include ASHA Honors (2000), ANCDS Honors (2005), and the Sallie Starr Hillard Mentoring Award from the University of Memphis (2007). I am also an ASHA Fellow. I have published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, and authored/co-authored seven books, 21 chapters, and six standardized tests. To date, I have presented over 300 scholarly papers/poster presentations, short courses, mini-seminars, and workshops to professional and scholarly conferences throughout North America and in Central and South America, and Europe.
