Current Western Carolina University MSW Students may enroll in the substance abuse studies certificate program. Completion of the certificate will enable them to obtain their S.A. licensure in one year versus two years post graduation. Students will be required to take all four courses and complete the 18-hour workshop. They must also do their field practicum in a substance abuse treatment agency. Other MSW students may take the courses as electives, providing there is available space, and count them towards their substance abuse licensure at a later date.

Other graduate students may be considered for the certificate program provided their discipline is in human services (e.g. social work, psychology, counseling, etc). These students MUST meet with the Substance Abuse Studies Program Coordinator for approval. Please contact Dottie Greene for an appointment (dgreene@email.wcu.edu).  Graduate students may take the courses as electives providing there is available space, and count the hours towards their substance abuse licensure at a later date.

Application to Certificate Program -  Application and resume are required for acceptance to this program. A $25 administrative fee payable to Western Carolina University Department of Social Work should be submitted with application materials.

Note:  Registration for each individual course is also required through the normal registration system.
