WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus

Climbing Wall
Indoor Climbing at the Campus Recreation Center

Western Carolina offers one of the most extensive climbing programs in the east,

and the TALLEST collegiate wall in North Carolina!

The Base Camp Climbing wall offers 2100 square feet of climbing surface and is 50 ft. tall. There are routes designed for the first-time climber as well as for the serious climber looking for a workout. In addition to rope climbing on the tall part of the wall, there also is a bouldering arch ideal for working on technique without the hassle of waiting for a belay. The wall is now open to lead climbing- ask on duty staff members for more information.

All WCU community members are welcome - best of all it's FREE!

Learn to Climb

Base Camp Cullowhee's Climbing Wall Staff Members are passionate about climbing. From learning how to tie basic knots to learning advanced skills like lead climbing on our wall, our staff can teach it. Every Thursday we offer a FREE belay class. Fall classes begin at 6pm and are limited to eight people. First come, first serve! Bring a friend!

Belay Workshop- Every Thursday at 6pm (show up early!)

Belay Challenge- Already know how to harness up, tie your own knots, and belay- ask a staff member to offer you your chance to skip the class and show us what you already know. Successful challenges earn yellow card certification.

Lead Climbing Workshop- Only $15 which includes instruction and the check off. Space limited to 10 participants. Participants must already have yellow card certification. For more information call Base Camp Cullowhee or stop by for a visit!
