In Memoriam of E. Malcolm Abel

Elisha Malcolm Abel II, Western Carolina University associate professor of business law in the Business Administration & Law and Sport Management Department of the College of Business, passed away Dec. 12, 2009. Malcolm was born in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 14, 1948. Malcolm is survived by his wife of 42 years, Millicent “Millie” H. Abel, their children, Kristina Abel Gunter of New Salisbury, Ind., E. Malcolm Abel III of Louisville, Ky., E. Daniel Abel of Lanesville, Ind., and eight grandchildren.

Malcolm earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Indiana University Southeast in 1980. In 1983, he earned his Juris Doctor degree from Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. He is also an alumnus of Western Carolina University, completing his master of public administration in 1997. Malcolm joined the faculty of Western Carolina University full time Aug. 1, 1999.

Malcolm totally devoted himself to making the university better. His concern for the well-being and success of our students, faculty and staff was evident in his exemplary teaching, focused research and high level of thoughtful service. Malcolm was a robust academician. When he talked, people listened, and everyone was enriched. He was a diligent, multidimensional and colorful individual who enjoyed life and was not afraid to make fun of himself.

Malcolm was truly one of a kind and one of the most inspiring people in the College of Business. While Malcolm’s passing is our great loss, his commitment to helping others and the joy that he brought to us continue to live on.

We all feel this loss and remember fondly Professor E. Malcolm Abel’s warm and engaging personality, willingness to listen, love of discovery and discourse, commitment to student success, dedication to service, sense of humor and trusting friendship.
