What Students Can Expect from ASC Tutors
- Tutors are students, too! Like you, ASC tutors have busy schedules and many responsibilities outside their tutoring jobs.
- If you have an appointment with a tutor, be courteous and show up on time.
- If you can't make it to your tutoring appointment, please call ahead to cancel. Another student may need your spot!
- Tutors are not professors. Our tutors have been recommended by the faculty to tutor in specific areas, but they do not have the same level of expertise as your professor.
- Tutors may not be able to answer every question you bring to them, but they will help you identify other resources for answering your questions.
- Tutors will not re-teach material that you may have missed as a result of absences from class.
- Tutors are not aware of how assignments are graded; therefore, they will avoid suggesting a grade or criticizing how an assignment has been graded.
- Tutors are trained. All new tutors in the ASC are required to enroll in a semester-long training course where they learn appropriate skills for working with students in one-on-one or small-group tutoring sessions.
- Tutors will not do your work for you. The tutoring experience is most successful when students are actively involved in learning the material for themselves. Tutors can help facilitate that process, but you must come to your sessions prepared with class notes, readings, assignments, and a list of questions you have about the material.
- Tutors will not comment negatively to students about instructors' teaching methods, assignments, personality, or grading policies.
- Tutors will honor the confidentiality of the tutoring relationship.
