Dr. Harris has won awards for investigative reporting, news writing, advertising copywriting, research and poetry from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Insight magazine, the Associated Church Press, the East Texas Advertising Association, the MacDougall Paper Competition, as well as the Doctoral Forum Award from the American Society for Information Science.

Dr. Harris's research focuses on strategic use of the internet and social networking as well as press coverage of early Civil Rights cases.  Dr. Harris has been recognized by Marquis Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.  She has traveled in Europe and taught workshops in London on using the internet strategically.  She has taught crisis communication, health care communication, gender and family communication as well as public speaking, professional writing, mass media, advanced reporting and public relations courses.  She holds accreditation from the Public Relations Society of America.  A professional organist, Dr. Harris collects old typewriters, old cameras and textiles.  She is an avid genealogist.
